Fred Hopkins WA commenced business in Irwin Street in the Perth City in 1951. Originally a motorcycle repair shop, Fred Hopkins Snr. changed to agricultural machinery repairs when a customer came into the shop looking for someone to repair his auger. The business moved to its current location in 1960, where Fred Hopkins Jnr built the building with the help of Fred Snr.
In August 2004 Dudley and Gary Johnson bought the business, having come from an agricultural/ business background in Zimbabwe. Dudley had owned and managed several large businesses since 1973 with varied interests including electrical wholesale, aviation electronics, switch gear manufacturing and agricultural machinery and general supplies. He also farmed since 1978 and was mainly involved with beef, Virginia tobacco and wildlife production and large scale mushrooms. Gary has a BSc degree in Agriculture and farmed Virginia tobacco and cattle from 1990 until the closure of his farm in 2000. Their farms were run as a partnership since 1990. Both Dudley and Gary sat on the board of directors of a large agricultural supply business and were active in making management decisions which lead to the very successful performance of that business right up till they emigrated due to political unrest in Zimbabwe.
